EVALUATION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHING IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS - A SICI-PROJECT
Between the end of 1996 and the end of 2000 a project entitled 'Evaluation of mathematics in secondary schools' was carried out under the auspices of SICI, the Standing International Conference of Central and General Inspectorates of Education. The aim of the project was to evaluate the practices and the results of mathematics teaching in secondary schools in participating schools by means of joint inspections. The purpose of this project was to benefit inspectorates by sharing inspections techniques and gaining understanding of mathematics teaching in participating countries. Under the supposition that it is more likely that mathematics education in participating countries is more comparable in the lower than in the upper forms of secondary education the project concentrated on 12 - 16 year olds and not on the upper end of secondary education.
