The SICI Inspection Academy (SIA for short) is a context – both real and virtual – within and through which SICI members can share expertise, learn from each other and form authoritative views on inspection issues. Members will be able to provide and receive support, training and development to their mutual benefit. As currently envisaged, SIA will have 3 main, interlinking components.
1. A spectrum of opportunities to meet in face-to-face contexts. These 'learning and training' events might range from full-scale SICI-sponsored strategic discussion events potentially involving all SICI members to local training and development workshops with SICI input and involving only one or two members. 2. A specialised, contracted, training arrangement involving SICI expertise in the development and training of inspectors in, usually, a single member state. Such events would be organised at the request of the member state and most probably be funded externally. 3. An electronic database for the storage of information about inspection practices in member states, including inspection instruments, available expertise in specific areas and an indication of development needs and priorities. Members’ questionnaire returns will form the initial basis of the database. Work is currently underway to develop the SICI website to include the interactive capacity to facilitate this component of SIA. Further information will be available in the near future.
In the meantime, if you wish to post any information on these pages, please contact Isobel McGregor or Yvan Verbauwhede. 1. Face-to-face 'learning and training' events 1.1 SICI Workshops 2010 Workshop 1: Citizenship: Copenhagen, 22-24 March 2010 The first workshop 2010 will be hosted by Skolestyrelsen (The Danish School Agency) and SICI in Copenhagen, 22-24 March 2010. The overall purpose of the workshop is to work with citizenship both from a theoretical perspective and from the more practical perspective of education inspectors. Day one deals with citizenship in a theoretical perspective and introduces several understandings to be used the following days. The second day offers the participants common experiences and references from a 'pilot' school visit. After the school visits the groups will work up their experiences and deduct some key challenges and possible common indicators of citizenship. On the third day the work is focused on agreeing on conclusions, recommendations and key points of attentions to bear in mind when monitoring citizenship education. 'Using Student Achievement data for School Inspections': Amsterdam, 18-19 May 2010 The second workshop 2010 will be hosted by The Netherlands Inspectorate of Education and SICI in Amsterdam, The Netherlands 18-19 of May 2010. The overall purpose of the conference is to exhange knowledge and experiences in using student achievement data (attainment, progress, social performance) for school inspections. The meeting focuses on two key questions: •What information on student achievement is available for school inspections? •How can this information be used for inspections? The questions will be answered for countries with standardised information available on student achievement data (test scores, exams, drop out rates), as well as for countries where these student data have to be collected and assessed during an inspection visit. This is the first time that Estyn, or Wales, has hosted an international conference of this kind, and we are excited about the opportunity to work with colleagues from across Europe. The focus of the conference is Inspecting teaching and learning, and we believe the programme of speakers and school visits will provide an excellent insight into Wales teaching and learning practices, whilst the broad range of workshops available will provide an insight into other European countries practices. Attached, you will find full details of the conference programme and an invitation to deliver one of the workshops during the course of the conference. We would be most grateful if you could review the list of proposed workshops, and complete and return the attached Workshop Proposal Form with the details of the workshop you would like to deliver, by 1st July 2010. Finally, a registration form is attached. We would be grateful if you could complete and return this by 1st July 2010.
